“In the history of photography some images are so radical that people aren’t able to situate them temporarily. Carlos Perez Siquier’s images of the beach show us a fresh perspective in relation to the Spanish context in which they were created.

By that time, in the early 70s, Europe still remained slave of black and white photography: for professionals, color formed part of the world of advertisement or of snapshots. On the other hand, in the United States, early experiments of color photography made their way to the museum walls, with figures such as William Eggleton and Stephen Shore.

I remember asking Carlos if he knew about other artists that were using color or if he had ever studied them and his answer was “no”. His work had not received the influence of any other professional.

I would’ve enjoyed seeing the reaction that these images provoked during their presentation in Spain, but I also imagine they did not awaken much excitement between the members of the more traditional supporters of black and white photography. It could have easily been understood as heresy! The impudence of the subject, the intensity of the colors…Everything must have seemed too trivial.

I would like to think that his work influenced mine but unfortunately, I hadn`t seen these images when I first started photographing beaches in color. In more recent times with a ring flash and macro objective, without knowing it, the visual language of Siquier became present. If I remember, on the other hand, the first time I saw them (15 years ago), when I slowed my pace to contemplate them, I assumed it was part of a more recent series. It surprised me when I was able to ascertain that it was produced during the early 70s.

And here we are, many years later, being able to appreciate more carefully these extraordinary images.”
