Toni Catany. S/T Nº87. Somniar deus, 1988

Autodidacta. Vivió y trabajó en Barcelona desde 1960. En 1968 publica sus primeros reportajes, acompañando a B. Porcel, sobre Israel y Egipto en la revista Destino y sobre Baleares en La Vanguardia.

A partir de 1979 se da a conocer internacionalmente con un trabajo fotográfico en el que utiliza la antigua técnica del calotipo. En 1987 Lunwerg Editores publica una selección de sus naturalezas muertas en color, ”Natures Mortes”, premiada como el mejor libro fotográfico en la edición de la Primavera Fotográfica de 1988. En los Rencontres Internationales de la Photographie de Arles ganó el premio del Libro con “La meva Mediterrània”, editado por Lunwerg y premiado por la Generalitat de Catalunya como el mejor libro ilustrado del año. En julio de 1991 el ministerio de Cultura de Francia le otorga el título de Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. En 1994 Lunwerg Ed. publica “Somniar deus” y” Obscura memoria”. En 1997 su monografia “Toni Catany .-Fotografies” es premiada por los Editores Europeos publicándose simultáneamente en Alemania, Francia, Inglaterra, Italia y España y obtiene asimismo el premio al mejor libro ilustrado del año que otorga la Generalitat de Catalunya. En septiembre de 2000,el Museo Nacional de Arte de Catalunya (MNAC) expone una antología de su obra “Toni Catany. El artista en su paraíso”. En 2001, la Generalitat de Catalunya le concede el Premio Nacional d’Arts Plástiques y el Ministerio de Ed. y  Cultura el Premio Nacional de Fotografía . En 2002 publica dos libros, " Dels qui escriuen " con retratos de escritores catalanes y el PhotoBolsillo  nº 45  "Toni Catany " editado por La Fabrica. En el 2003 “Record de Llucmajor " , en 2004 “Liebana infinita “ en 2006 tambien con Lunwerg Editores    “Venessia” .y en 2007 “ Visions de Tirant lo Blanc”.

Un año después de su fallecimiento, y en cumplimiento de su voluntad, fue inaugurada la Fundació Toni Catany en Llucmajor.

His work is internationally known in part for using calotype as his main technique. In 1997 his monograph "Toni Catany.-Fotografies" is awarded by the European Publishers publishing simultaneously in Germany, France, England, Italy and Spain and also obtains the prize for the best illustrated book of the year granted by the Generalitat de Catalunya. In September 2000, the National Museum of Art of Catalonia (MNAC) exhibits an anthology of his work “Toni Catany. The artist in his paradise ”. In 2001, the Generalitat de Catalunya granted him the National Prize d’Arts Plastics and the Ministry of Ed and Culture the National Prize for Photography. In 2002 he published two books, "Dels qui write" with portraits of Catalan writers and PhotoBolsillo No. 45 "Toni Catany" edited by La Fabrica. In 2003 "Record of Llucmajor", in 2004 "Liebana infinita" in 2006 also with Lunwerg Editores "Venessia". And in 2007 "Visions of Tirant lo Blanc".

A year after his death, and in compliance with his will, the Toni Catany Foundation was inaugurated in Llucmajor.
