Isabel Muñoz was invited to participate in the Planche(s) Contact 2018 Festival with the commission, by the curators François Cheval and Audrey Hoareau, to carry out a project on the French city of Deauville, scene of the festival.

In the imaginary of the Catalan creator, Deauville appeared wrapped in the magic of the foggy Norman coasts, chosen as a refuge of interwar by intellectuals and international celebrities and inhabited by fantastic beings, the unicorns, whom for other people tanned in more earthly codes would simply be horses … And decided to do a job that, with the sea as a scenario, connect both worlds, the ethereal with the corporeal, the mythical creature with the beast, the spiritual with the sensual, the unreal with the earthly. And, next to them, the human form, for whom the horse is at the same time animal of recreation and company, friend, a source of inspiration and even, a therapeutic catalyst that heals damages of abuse, mobility problems, traumatological diseases or disabilities. Isabel wanted, also, to pay homage to the Norman equestrian race, which is very similar to the cave paintings discovered in the neighboring country, which focuses the artist’s gaze once again on the search for the origins of our human lineage.

Symbol of pure love, honesty and transparency, the unicorn is an entity of fable to which the Vikings attributed a marine character, probably to benefit from the high demand for Nerval fang that they traded all over the world. The popular imaginary of the Middle Ages associated the long and turning tusk of the cetacean with that of the mythical steed, turning it into an object of numerous artistic manifestations. Isabel Muñoz was captivated by the purity of this supernatural being when, visiting the Cluny Museum in Paris, she discovered the flamenco tapestry La dame à la licorne. After passing through the Deauville show, Mi-homme, mi-bête, an 11-year-old girl left a note written in the signature book: “With these pictures, you might think that unicorns exist.”
